Supreme Court strikes down a Louisiana law requiring abortion clinics to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals.
Business Insider (Moderate Left) • Credibility Grade 86% • 5 min read

Louisiana's restriction, passed in 2014 as part of Act 620, required abortion providers to have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles. The law is a type of regulation known as a targeted restriction on abortion providers, or "TRAP" law. Such laws place burdensome requirements on clinics that make it more expensive and difficult to operate; many have closed altogether.
    ...
The court heard arguments in the case in March after the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld Louisiana's law in 2019, overturning a US District Court ruling to strike down the law. The case, June Medical Services v. Russo, is the first pertaining to abortion rights that the court has ruled on since Gorsuch and Kavanaugh were confirmed.
    ...
[Justice Stephen Breyer] wrote that the Supreme Court must uphold the District Court's "determination that Louisiana's law poses a 'substantial obstacle' to women seeking an abortion; its determination that the law offers no significant health-related benefits; and its determination that the law consequently imposes an 'undue burden' on a woman's constitutional right to choose to have an abortion."

    ...
Hundreds of protesters marched to Krewson's house on Sunday, calling for her resignation. A man and a woman armed with guns and shouting at demonstrators passing their mansion in a private, gated community became a viral story.
    ...
"I'd like to apologize for identifying individuals who presented letters to me at City Hall today," Krewson tweeted on Thursday. "This was during one of my Facebook updates as I was answering routine questions. Never did I intend to harm anyone or cause distress. The update is removed and again, I apologize."

Muslim women who have "too many" children are also being thrown into the concentration camps currently operating in China's Xinjiang region—facilities that President Trump has reportedly endorsed, according to former National Security Advisor John Bolton who alleged as much in his explosive new book, The Room Where It Happened.
    ...
In yet another sign the Chinese government is systematically targeting the minority Uighur population, roughly 80% of all IUDs implanted in the country in 2018 were given to women in Xinjiang, according to [Adrian Zenz, Senior Fellow in China Studies at the Jamestown Foundation]. That's a startling figure when you realize that Uighurs represent less than 2% of China's population of 1.4 billion people.
    ...
"It's genocide, full stop. It's not immediate, shocking, mass-killing on the spot type genocide, but it's slow, painful, creeping genocide," Joanne Smith Finley, an expert at Newcastle University in the UK, told the [Associated Press].

Reddit bans largest pro-Trump subreddit amid hate speech crackdown.
The Guardian (Moderate Left) • Credibility Grade 75% • 3 min read

The subreddit and its more than 750,000 subscribers had played a major role in shaping the trollish tone and style of the Trump campaign's digital persona during the 2016 campaign. The Trump aides Brad Parscale and Dan Scavino were reportedly frequent visitors, and memes or videos from the board on occasion found their way to Trump's Twitter feed.
    ...
Reddit banned r/The_Donald, saying that it had "consistently hosted and upvoted more rule-breaking content than average" while refusing to cooperate with the company's efforts to bring it into compliance. In 2019, Reddit placed it under "quarantine" due to repeated violations of rules, including the "encouragement of violence towards police officers and public officials in Oregon."
    ...
Reddit said it was "initially banning about 2,000 subreddits", though just 200 of them had more than 10 daily active users. Among the other communities that were banned for "promoting hate" were r/ChapoTrapHouse, a message board for fans of the leftwing podcast, and r/GenderCritical, a community of anti-trans feminists.

How affordable is the price for Remdesivir, a coronavirus treatment option?
Please click Display images in your email app to view this email properly

Remdesivir priced at more than $3,100 for a course of treatment.
NPR (Moderate Left) • Credibility Grade 91% • 4 min read

In the United States, Gilead Sciences will charge $520 per vial for patients with private insurance, with some government programs getting a lower price. With a double-dose the first day, that comes out to $3,120 for the five-day treatment course. How much uninsured patients would pay is still unclear.
    ...
Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Texas, called the price "outrageous." "Without a taxpayer investment of $99 million, this drug would have been abandoned. It would be on the scrap heap of failures," he tells NPR. "So it's the taxpayer who's really taking the risk here and ought to get the reward of the angel investors that taxpayers are."
    ...
The Institute for Clinical and Economic Review, or ICER, an influential nonprofit that analyzes drug pricing, said Gilead showed "restraint" and set a "responsible" price. That said, ICER President Steven Pearson noted that this reasoning assumes remdesivir will eventually be shown to improve COVID-19 survival — something research hasn't yet proven.
